Municipal, from a friend of the club: Brackenridge Park was built in 1916 and is an A.W. Tillinghast design. Cool routing, bunkering and a bit of elevation. This is a classic muni and one of my favorites in the state ainly due to it's history. The Texas Open was held from 1922-59. Champions such as Hagen, Burke, Snead and Nelson. Short, easy to walk and a lot of fun and easy on the pocketbook.

Before becoming an architect Tull owned a very prolific construction firm building courses for Mr. Tillinghast, Walter Travis and Dev Emmet. Sure it's not fancy, but it's fun, affordable and fast, with enough character to earn our seal of approval. 9 holes super tiny on top of a mountain surrounded entirely by dense state forest, from their site :: In 1921, a group of doctors at the near by South Mountain Sanatorium built three holes for a recreation area so patients could use golf as therapy. Six more holes were added between 1930-31. The course remained in that state --- nine holes, each with a sand ""green"" -- until 1964 when the land passed to what is now the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, then it sat idle for three years. In 1967 a local group leased the land from the state and opened the course for play again in 1968. Greens fees for the day were $2.00. Between 1975 and 1985 the group, South Mountain Golf Course Inc. Gradually gussied up the course. It built nine new greens -- using grass this time instead of sand -- and constructed new tees and a new clubhouse, which was remodeled again in 2007.

Bring an extra sleeve of balls to this hidden gem, and don't miss Colonial Downs Race Track and the casino right next door! Only the brave Sugarloafers will take on the "Invicta" ("unconquered") tees (7,440 yards, 76.8/154 course and slope rating). We recommend moving forward a set of tees or two!

Designed by ASGCA founding member Wayne Stiles, South Shore was once private but became public in 1988. The course has a candlepin bowling alley in the clubhouse(!!) Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Babe Ruth all played here!

Nine-hole course on Nantucket: one of the oldest public golf courses in the country (est. 1899) was private until 2012. For its first 127 years, tee times were not required, but in 2021, tee times were added. Known by locals as “Skinner’s,” named after Robert “Skinner” Coffin, longtime co-owner and superintendent.
